Profile

Brian Wendell-Edit

One of my fondest memories from my childhood was waking up early on weekends with my father and heading to the golf course. He would change cups, I would rake bunkers and race the cart. When we were finished I was paid in Egg McMuffins!

The Golf Course Superintendent business runs deep in my family.  My father is a Superintendent and made me his Assistant at Country Club of New Bedford shortly after graduating from Eastern Connecticut State University with a Bachelors of Science in Communications in 2007. He told me no one else would hire me unless I had some kind of turf education. A few years later, in 2011, I took 40 credits in two semesters and graduated from The University of Rhode Island with a Bachelors of Science in Environmental Horticulture and Turfgrass Management with honors.

In 2012 I became the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent at Newport National Golf Club, Rhode Island’s #1 ranked public golf destination at the time. Despite its ranking, the property was for sale my entire tenure, so we were managing an asset while maintaining conditions that lived up to our hype. In 2014 I became North/South Golf Course Superintendent at Lake of Isles in North Stonington CT.

In 2015 I began working at Greenwich Country Club as the Lead Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. In 2018 I had the privilege of aiding in Beau Welling’s redesign and rebuild of all greens to USGA specifications. This project was coupled with a state-of-the-art irrigation system install along with the pump station to support it. Most of my role in the project was leading the staff in the maintenance of the property while the the infrastructure was created around us.

In 2020, I accepted a position as Lead Assistant Golf Course Superintendent at Rolling Hills Country Club in Wilton, Connecticut where I help strategize and guide our staff to implement our agronomic plan.

Record-keeping is one skill that I take immense pride in. My method of tracking employee hours helped gain a 15% increase in labor from our 2021 to 2022 operating budget. I have also fine-tuned spreadsheets to track plant protection and nutrient applications and inventory, equipment inventory and hours, employee contact information and daily operations. The more data we track, the easier it is to put a “why” to the budget.

Throughout my career I have worked at many different golf courses from high end private, to courses struggling to keep their private status, to public and resort courses. I am always looking to further my education while working hard to produce the conditions that exceed golfers expectations under any conditions.
